Tank Stars is an artillery duel, not a driving game. Two tanks sit on opposite sides of a hilly landscape and take turns lobbing shells at each other. Each shot is a small physics puzzle: how steep the barrel is and how much power goes behind the shell decide where it lands, and the terrain between you and the enemy is usually in the way.

That makes it a slower, more thoughtful pick than most of the shelf on Awesome Tanks. A match is short. Both sides have a health bar, you alternate shots, and the first tank to run out of health loses. A miss is not wasted, because the crater shows you how far off you were and you correct on the next turn.

How to play

This is a turn-based game, so the driving keys used by most tank games here do not apply. It is played by pointing and clicking, or by tapping on a phone. On your turn you nudge the tank a little if you need a better position, set the firing angle and the power, then press the fire button. Then you wait while the opponent does the same.

Click once inside the game window first so it takes your input. After each shot, watch where the shell came down and adjust: a shell that fell short needs more power, one that flew past needs less, and a wall of hill in the way usually needs a higher angle.

Tips

• Change one thing at a time. If you alter both angle and power after a miss, you never learn which one was wrong.
• Use the first shot to measure the distance. Treat it as a range-finder rather than a serious attempt.
• Look at the ground around both tanks. Higher ground gives you a better line, and a tank tucked behind a ridge needs a steeper arc.
• Try the different weapons when you get the chance, since some shells behave differently from the standard one and suit different situations.
